I have downloaded Awakening and have tried to follow your instructions. However, when I try to run setup after mounting the iso file, it keeps telling me that Dragon Age: Origins needs to be installed on my computer. This is driving me crazy, as Dragon Age: Origins IS installed on my computer; I just finished the game yesterday! How do I get around this? Thanks!

Oh, and on top of that, if I run the setup with my original Dragon Age:Origins start-up screen on, it tells me that I have to close all my running components of Origins before I can install Awakening. So how come it can detect Origins AND not detect it at the same time? I can’t understand this!

Hello, Joshua Teh.
This first problem you stated is often encountered when the installer cannot find the files it is looking for because it has insufficient user privileges or is looking for files that are non-existent (e.g. external hard-drive or portable devices).
Did you install DA Origins with another user account? If so, you need to change the permissions of the directory to allow Full Access to the Users group (right-click -> properties -> permissions).
The second issue is axiomatic – it is detecting the application. The installer is likely set up to detect programs that are being run and will usually request that you close them before continuing with the installation.
The ‘real’ problem you are trying to solve is in relation to the installation of the expansion. The quick solution that may also risk your game data (please backup your saved games and other files in your documents folder) is to reinstall DA Origins and then the expansion. You can then import the game data into the game save folder.

Hi Panuary,
DA Origins is installed on my computer, not on an external hard-drive or portable device. And there’s only one user on my computer – myself. So I’m guessing that’s not the issue.
Could the problem be cause by how I came to get the game in the first place? I copied the DA Origins file wholesale from my friend’s external hard-disk into my computer hard-drive. There was no installation process, but the game runs just fine. Could that be the cause it is unable to be detected, that it was not installed in the proper manner? There is no ‘setup.exe’ in the folder I have, because it was already the complete installed version. Hope this makes sense.
Thanks and cheers!

Hi Joshua, seems like the problem has been found.
Yes, the registry entries are not on your computer and that’s why the expansion update didn’t work, so you will need to install it with the installer. I think there could be a workaround if you can copy the registry entries from your friend’s computer over to yours so the installer knows “where” you installed DA Origins.
Search for Origins in the Windows Registry, or to save the hassle, install DA Origins with the installer because that’s the only way to get things straightened out.
This also happened to me when copying over my friend’s Warcraft III and failed to install the expansion called The Frozen Throne. I solved the problem by making a string named “InstallPath” under the game’s registry key, and set its value to my game directory. After that the patches could be installed properly.
Also, please make sure you have the Awakening disc, and not the DA Origins, but that’s pretty much self-explanatory so I’ll be here to help however I can.
PS next time, install means that you ran the installer for the game. This is known as the installation process. The reason why this is so important is that when installing patches or updates (such as expansions) the patch tries to find the install directory via the Windows Registry under the game’s string, e.g. Blizzard Entertainment > Warcraft III > InstallPath.
If the entry is invalid (cannot be found) then the patch will say that it has failed to locate the game, in this case DA Origins.

Hi Panuary,
Thanks for the advice. Seems I’ve found the root of my problem. However, I don’t have DA Origins, and the friend I copied the game from is in another state! Is it possible for me to create a string by myself, and if so, how do I do that? I’m sorry if I sound like a noob, but I’m pretty much out of my depth here, haha… Thanks again for responding, and cheers!

A possible solution is to make a key in your registry under HKLM.
right-click HKLM\SOFTWARE\-> new key ->name BioWare
right-click BioWare -> new key -> name Dragon Age
right-click Dragon Age -> new string
As shown below:-
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\BioWare\Dragon Age]
“Language”=”en”
“ProductName”=”Dragon Age: Origins”
“Path”=”{PATH}”
“Flavour”=”DVD”
“GUID”=”{AEC81925-9C76-4707-84A9-40696C613ED3}”
“StartMenu”=”C:\\ProgramData\\Microsoft\\Windows\\Start Menu\\Programs\\Dragon Age Origins\\”
“GameExplorer”=”{ED152CFD-3634-42F3-8C91-A1F4D5329442}”
The above excerpt was found here.
However, for best results you should download DA Origins that Demon linked to in his post above.
No prob, I hope it works out for you.

So it installed fine, but when I go into the game, the “Other Campaigns” button is still grayed out and I can’t click it. I tried installing again but it said Awakening was already installed. What should I do?
Yes, me and you have the same problem but it seems no one has a fix.
This might work for us, I’m about to reinstall again and try it: http://social.bioware.com/forum/Dragon-Age-Origins/Dragon-Age-Origins-PC-Technical-Support/Awakening-installed-amp-not-working-Are-you-serious-1806835-1.html

Hey, I think i figured it out, right click on the setup.exe, and choose troubleshoot compatability (windows 7) or properties-compatability mode.
Hope this helps!
Thanks Green, that helped
He is right, right click troubleshoot compatibility and let Windows make some changes. It worked perfect for me.

Both darkspawn chrons and awakening the enemies just sit and do nothing. Also companians just sit unless I command them.
Appears I install okay
Whats up?
if you’re on the computer, try pressing “H”
Thank you Justin,
Thats not the problem. I have the origional game and it plays fine (enemies attack, friends attack). When I start awakening they just stand there. I can hack away at them. When I press H it just causes my friends to stand still or move with me when I move, but they still wont attack unless I tell them to and then just once (my character also).
Any other ideas?

Figured it out. After some thought I tried removing some of my downloaded content by trial and error.
The item in question is ‘advanced tactics 2.3′. Once disabled the game plays fine.
Hope this posting helps others somehow.

I am having trouble installing. I’ve tried every solution I can find. I downloaded the torent, extracted the ISO. Mounted with Daemon Tools Lite. I’ve run the setup.exe in every compatible version, and it still wont work. I’m running on Windows 7. Any ideas or solutions would be greatly appreciated.

I’m having the same problems as bob is above. My DA origins work fine but I have problems installing awakening. I’ve already tried setting my compatibility to windows 2000 but that did not help.

I finally figured out what the error message was that I was unable to see during installation. I was able to capture it on my computer screen and paste it on a word document.
*******************************************************************************
Old file not found. However, a file of same name was found. No update done since file contents do not match

my dragon age orgins version is 1.03.

“Other Campaigns” is always greyed out and I’ve retried and uninstalled/reinstalled atleast 10 times now and have no idea what the problem is. I follow the instructions VERY carefully each time and get access to awakening. However the original campaign works flawlessly.

I had skidrows DA origins installed (I didnt patch it so I dunno if it was patched automatically or there wasnt any patch), so I downloaded Awakening, installed, patched to 1.03, inserted crack, and when I want to play it says “Cannot find DA disc, please insert the disc and try again” if the DA origins disc is mounted, or “Failed to authenticate the disc, please insert the correct disc and try again” if the DA awakening disc is mounted. It also gives me a “fmod_event.dll” error when I try to launch the game without launcher but via crack. I have downloaded that .dll file and put it into system32 but it didnt help.
Anyone knows what to do? this is the second time i’ve played all the way threw origins as fun as it is i would hate to have to do it again…
