Hello and welcome to my installation guide for Garry’s Mod 10/11. This guide is to show you how to get Garry’s Mod 11 without the need to have Steam installed, and obviously you will get it for free as well. Garry’s Mod is a sandbox mod running on the Source engine. Unlike many other games, Garry’s Mod does not have any predefined goals or aims. You are given tools and objects, and with these objects, you can build whatever you like. You could perhaps create a catapult from light poles and dumpsters, or maybe a car from a door and wheels. You can also pose models for things such as comics (comics are pretty big in the Garry’s Mod community). Garry’s Mod (in my opinion) is one of the best games out there because the possibilities are limitless. There a thousands of mods and maps for Garry’s Mod to expand your options.

Downloading
Everything you need (including the Source engine) comes with this torrent. You will also need Winrar if you don’t have it.

You will not need any kind of crack for the game. The download should take anywhere from 30-45 minutes, depending on your internet.
Installing Garry’s Mod 11
The torrent contained 4 files, all .rar files. There should game, garrysmod, GCF, tools.
This is sort of a long process. You will need to follow every step carefully.
- Extract ALL of the .rar files. It doesn’t matter where you extract them to, as long as you have access to them.
- Game is the actual game itself, it contains the Source engine and all the files you need for Garry’s Mod. Inside of the Game folder should be several different things. Ignore everything except for the Garry’s Mod 11 Shortcut.
- The shortcut is broken, so you will need to fix it. It originally points to the D: drive (lol) and it needs to be pointed to your hl2.exe file. You need to move your whole Game folder to wherever you want its permanent location to be. The best place would probably be in your Program Files or Program Files (x86) in your C: drive, but it’s up to you.
- Once you have cut and pasted it to where you want it, rename the Game folder to something like Gmod or Garrysmod. Try not to use any symbols when renaming it.
- Open up your newly renamed Game folder. Now we need to fix that shortcut. Right click on the
Garry’s Mod 11 Shortcut and then click Properties. A box should come up. - You should automatically be on the Shortcut tab. Next to target, it should point to something crazy like in your D: drive or something. Erase that. You need to direct it to your hl2.exe file. It should be in your Game folder. After you have it targeted, add this onto the end of it. Make sure there is a space: -steam -game garrysmod -appid 4001
- Next you need to change your Start In location. This needs to point to the folder that holds everything, your Game folder. After all this is done, it should look something like this: http://i46.tinypic.com/2958tq8.jpg
- That’s it! Now you shortcut should be working correctly and Garry’s Mod 11 should launch. You can move this shortcut out of the Game folder and place it elsewhere now.
Modding and Addons
When you downloaded the torrent, you got a folder called garrysmod. This folder contains Addons and other things you can add into the game if you would like. To add these things to your game, open the garrysmod folder and select all the contents of it. Cut (you can copy but it will take a while) and paste all these folders inside of your garrysmod folder. This folder is found in your Game folder, the one that you probably renamed. You will know if it works.
New addons can be found on different websites around the web. Try fpsbanana.com or moddb.com. You cannot use the major modding website because it requires you to prove you own Garry’s Mod 11 before you can download mods. That website is garrysmod.org.
Installing addons is very easy, just drop them into your Garrysmod > Addons folder.
FAQ
When I try to run Garry’s Mod, nothing happens! (OR) I get an error message!
- You might not have Targeted the right thing when you had to change things in the Shortcut. Make sure you check and see it’s Targeting hl2.exe and make sure your Start In is set to your Game folder.
My shortcut works okay, but for some reason I get a “YOU DONT OWN GARRY’S MOD 10″ message!
- You have Steam running. Make sure you close out of Steam before running Garry’s Mod.
When in-game, I get a ton of error messages!
- You probably didn’t install your Addons correctly. There are lots of videos on YouTube on how to install addons.
Okay everything works great… but how do I do stuff?
- When in-game, hold down the Q key to open up the menu. It has everything you need in it.

How do you turn off steam?
it’s probably in your system icon tray on the bottom right corner of your screen along the taskbar. right click on it and hit exit.

Yes, it is possible via Hamachi and I’m sure there are other privately hosted garry’s mod servers out there. If you set up a Hamachi network and have your friends connect to it, you should be able to connect via LAN and play together.

When I try to fix the shortcut, all it says is: ‘Unable to save changes to /Garry’s Mod 11/Ink’. The system cannot find the path specified.
What do I do?
Not sure. You could always try right-clicking hl2.exe and then clicking Create Shortcut and see if that works. Just make sure you add
-steam -game garrysmod -appid 4001
Try that.

I did everything and even some things over again but I cannot get the game to open when I click the shortcut. The target and the start in matches up, but i try to open it but it closes on me right away… Plz help?

I love playing Gmod at my friends house. but i did the steps i activate the shortcut then it brings me to a screen with a street cone on someones head. however it backs me out and i have an Engine Error I dont own Gmod 10
It didn’t even bring me to a screen. The taskbar thing flashed and then closed. Thats it. I erased it and tried a different way but the same exact thing happened. Is it my computer? Or my Virus Protection? i just don’t know.
What Operating System are you using It may Be that not sure…

i had to move a file called “vstdlib.dll” to hl2 folder, that worked than this
