One of the contemporary trends I have observed about Warcraft III (WCIII) is that most people who play Warcraft III have moved on to play multiplayer custom maps such as Defence of the Ancients (DotA – IceFrog) and Tower Defence (TD) maps like YouTD (eeve), Castle Fight, and Role-Playing Games (RPGs) like Final Fantasy ORPG and the like.
Most of the players play hosted games on servers like U.S West, Lordaeron, but you can find private Battle.Net servers. Two of the prominent ones in the Oceania region (e.g Australia) are Bored Aussies and AUS-1. Both require invitations for registration (PM me if you want a key ). I hope you will enjoy playing WCIII because it’s been one of the most memorable games I have ever played.

For international games, and Free to Play (F2P) servers, try Garena. It’s servers number in the hundreds, and tens of thousands of players play in low latency rooms (due to tunneling and synchronisation). I think Garena is a framework that caters for Starcraft (SC), Diablo, WCIII and other game clients also. Might be worth checking out if you are interesting in getting involved in the WCIII community.

If you find DotA more interesting than melee games, you can search the SetupSwarm (SS) forums for Heroes of Newerth (HoN). However, It will not be F2P once it gets out of its BETA stage. HoN specifically targets DotA players and is endorsed by MyMYM and owned by S2Games. The only issue I have is the point ranking system.

I never really tried WC3 but people tell me it’s better then starcraft and I love both starcraft and WoW so hopefully I will love WC3 too.
