SetupSwarm

A dark place on the interwebs

under construction

This is the todo list for OrangeSwarm

Because OrangeSwarm is still in its “beta” fase and we are always looking into ways to improve the website we have this t0do list here! if you have any suggestions, bug reports or idea’s this is the place to let us know!

Before submitting a idea please take a quick look whether we have it on the list already or not!

The bugs / fixes / changes that are being posted in this list are not sorted on how important they are, this means that the first in the list might not be the first that will be fixed.

oh and always remember:
“There is no such thing as a bad idea!”

General

  1. Recode the post php so a default image is picked when no image is added, chryseus idea: add generic default images, depending on category the post is submitted to.
  2. Change the download page theme - Work in progress

Forum

  1. Forum: Make/ Get a fitting (matching) template - working on it!
  2. Place the “New forum post” Icon in the left column instead of the default icon so its more obvious where a new post had been made.
  3. Automatically create a forum thread for every article thats posted where thread location depends on the article’s category.

Widgets

  • There seem to be no widget problems at the moment.

Articles

  • We are always looking at subjects for new articles, so if you know any please let us know!
  • We are getting so many suggestions on installation guide articles we started a forum thread where you can let us know what you would like to see. The forum thead is located here: Link to installation guide request forum thread

Idea’s

Yeah the increased padding really works!

    also…. about the comments…

The Horizontal line is a keeper, what about the Vertical line? keep it or leave it?

Urm.. comments seems to be ok for the moment.

    1) Ooooh, we need a download section!
    2) It would also be nice if we add a nice orange Register buttom someplace obvious on the website. Perhaps under the search bar? Anyway i asked Rexicon to do a little useablity test and he notited finding the register button wasnt easy enough.

but wheres the live chat i couldn’t find it.

    Reply from Demon

We do not have live chat.

We do have a general Chat topic in the forum.

I might look into a live chat later!

Edit: I talked to chryseus about the live chat and decided not to implement a live chat. the reason for this is that live chat is deadly to forum and article activity. We might add it later when we get a more solid user base.

Hi, I have a few questions I’d like to ask and a few suggestions.

Will there be a ‘preview’ post feature for comments in the future?
    ———————————————————————————–
If the server isn’t located in the US, perhaps posting a DMCA policy link in the next to [About | Disclaimer | Contact] footer might be useful. That way you cannot be liable for any links that members post in unmoderated areas of the site. I’m not sure about the laws relating to intellectual propoerty rights in Europe, though. -> I presume with all this talk about the Euro and all.
    ———————————————————————————–
For live chat, I hear AJAX offers quite good performance, using yahooapi or googleapi’s.
    ———————————————————————————–
@shazmazz: can you really say crack on this site? I’d rather say bypass or extended trial. Nonetheless, if it changes the source, it’s a patch regardless if you call it a crack or activator so w/e.
    ———————————————————————————–
Just poking fun :D Hope there was no -harm- done, but -keep- on with the good work.
    ———————————————————————————–
Will there be a forum banner or signature contests (e.g. Signature of the Week (SOTWs)?
    ———————————————————————————–
Also, do you backup the server or synchronise the database (online/offline) in case something goes wrong? I hear there are some security issues to do with wordpress, but this is just me wondering.

    Reply from Panuary

I can’t believe I forgot this, but is there an edit button (lol) or code feature for hyperlinks? As for decent links, I thought you used torrents. Tehparadox is a file-sharing community, but I’m not sure if they are decent, considering the current rising trend of trojans and rootkits you see in some user’s posts.
    ———————————————————————————–
Another suggestion that comes to find is an article template (kind of like the Search box).
With a textbox for Title, Sub-heading, Body, Links, Comments, Related articles, Keywords. If it pleases you, having a crack at it might be exciting :)
Maybe addings passwords to archives, having a member policy when registering with the site also?

Nevermind, I just looked at the Disclaimer. Maybe something about a Code of Conduct for members or ban-able offenses could be mentioned when registering.

    Reply from Demon

    First of all, welcome!

we are currently working on a new theme, but thats still in beta fase. Lots of new options will become available (including live preview for comments)

I will certainly have a look at the DMCA thing, however we have a pretty solid disclaimer.

For your option about a chat feature… we are still kind of debating about this (whether we want it or not)

Yes you can say crack… we dont really care :P

You mean a contest for creating a OrangeSwarm banner? we do need a banner for the new theme… so that could be an idea!

yeah we make backups on regular bases :) so not much harm can be done!

You can add hyperlinks by using html (hyperlink name) in the new theme we have a button for doing this next to the comment reply box ;)

About your last point on posting articles, when registered you can write articles for us, the problem is that that page is broken for some reason… you can use almost every html tag on it so if you want to write a article, please do. we did fix this error in the beta, but thats running wordpress 3.0 so it cant be ported like 123. we are planning on releasing the new theme as fast as possible though.

    Greetings,

    Demon

    Hey Panuary,

It would be great if you added me to MSN, you sound like a decent person! I will send you an email in a minute.

    For your questions:
We are internet badasses, but a DMCA disclaimer is a good idea. I will nag demon for a chatbox in the new theme, which looks MEGA sexy.

    Your welcome! :)

Not sure why, but when I post some images from tinypic.com the top-half of the image is shown clearly, but the bottom-half is cropped. I have verified that the image is whole and can be shown from the tinypic.com link (opening it in a separate tab). Is this a formatting issue?
Perhaps I should resize the image, as I am aware there may be some restrictions.

    Reply from Demon

when you upload an image in the browser the thumbnail image is cropped

when going to its url or using it in a article it is shown properly. ;)

In relation to the cascade menu for commenting, my idea was to make it easier for moderators and admins to manage events based on criteria.

The cascade system it’s a line of drop-down/sliding menus for commenting sections, with each bar relating to one specific section. This idea is shown below:

    Comments > veritical drop-down menu

    Horizontal…> sidebar1. [Feedback]
    sidebar2. [Queries]
    sidebar3. [Other]

(click on sidebar# to reveal comments in that section)

    An example of possible comments:
1 > “Way to go, it worked!” or, “It blew up my PC…”
2 > “Is there another version…?” or, “can you check download link #4?”
    3 > “How can I fix the PC that I blew up? This is a friend’s laptop I borrowed…”

Here is my rationale for the commenting system.

The commenting zone is more organised and allows members to remind others or assist new members to post in the correct section, integrating new members who have an interest in the SS/OS community.

    1. Feedback section is for relevant comments that are anecdotal, so it allows members to discuss their success or failure in following the instructions outlined in the article
    2. Queries section is for any questions directed at the OP in relation to the article/files
    3. Others section is for questions and comments that don’t belong in either category

This helps to filter out spam and irrelevant material

    Offsetting weaknesses and suggested solutions
Some of the limitations that might be considered are listed below:-
    problem: sorting comments
solution: new window to prompt the member to select category when adding comments

problem: incompatible with site design (looks odd)
    solution: scrap the idea

problem: website alignment / formatting issues
solution: reject proposal because of difficulty implementing.
Time is better spent on developing site because current system is stable and manageable.

    Additional notes
I always liked this style anyway and do not believe the commenting structure is an issue at the moment. I think the vision for the future of the site is top priority, and it is coming along nicely. It was only a suggestion that might make this site unique.

Then again, it just dawned on me that this might resemble the Windows 7 Start Menu.
    Nevermind then… <_<

I have always liked this comment method [url=http://tweakers.net/nieuws/67587/kinderen-moeten-vingerafdruk-plaatsen-om-boeken-te-lenen.html]here[/url] at tweakers.net.

What is really nice is that members can rate other peoples posts in effect making sure crap is removed or not-displayed. I however, would consider putting the newest comments on the top. This comment system does remove the avatars though which is a real shame.

    Reply from Demon

    @heroin

we can do that, the rating and stuff… and still have the avatars :P

    Panuary

    Posted on: May 31st, 2010 at 14:41

@Heroin: The rating system is an idea that I would support. I’d like to see it with avatars too as Demon suggested above.

@Demon: Maybe there can be changes to username colours and avatar borders so we know who is administrator, moderator and tech support. Perhaps based on number of posts?

Will there be a Primate Messages (PM) feature for the forums? That way members can send each other PMs.

Would different forum theme colours be another feature?

I’d be happy to look at the new forum if that’s alright with you, Demon.

I’m not sure if this has already been implemented yet, but safeguards to prevent image-hijacking, since image files are loaded from the server. It might not be a problem now, but some time in the future it might be the problem that is consuming a lot of bandwidth.
I found the article below helpful: bandwidth-hijacking

    Reply from Panuary

Suggestion #01A-06-001: use a ticket system to keep track of changes to be implemented.

You can even use an online database to read over suggestions and choose to flag them or not. So you can simply look into the ones that you marked at a later date. A suggestion for the ticket nomenclature (naming) system is shown below:-
    Layout is #AAA-BB-CCC [D]
    Legend: # = ticket identifier
AAA = first-two is database number, last one refers to section where
    A = TODO
    BB = month
    CCC=ticket number
[D] = flagged or not flagged (replace with image)

Sorry if it seems complicated, but I think it’s an efficient method if implemented successfully.
